SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge at Mink Brook
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hanover Conservancy\, the Connecticut River Conservancy\, and Hanover Parks and Recreation for an Earth Week bio blitz at Mink Brook Nature Preserve! Part of a planet-wide citizen science effort\, participants in the City Nature Challenge will search for a variety of plant and animal life\, learning how to identify species\, and how to record their observations on iNaturalist. No prior experience is necessary\, just a curiosity about the natural world! \nThroughout the morning different experts will lead public walks focused geared toward their respective specialties. We’ll also have technical support available for those interested in learning the iNaturalist system. \nAt 7am\, Gail McPeek and Tom Sherry will lead a bird walk\, as we hope to catch recent arrivals and short-time visitors during the spring migration season. \nAt 10am\, Alice Schori and Lynnwood Andrews will lead a botany walk\, as we turn our attention downward at the incredible diversity of plant life. \nAnd at noon we’ll host a family-friendly activity for budding scientists and explorers. \nWhile we hope to see you for one of our guided walks\, the City Nature Challenge runs the entire weekend\, and we encourage everyone to get out and record their observations whether as part of a group or on their own. \nFor more information and a sign up link can be found at the event’s official EventBrite page here. \n  \nWhile we love our furry friends\, we ask that you leave your dogs at home while attending public events\, thank you!

SUMMARY:Edible Plants with Russ Cohen (Howe Library)
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome wild food enthusiast Russ Cohen\, author of the book Wild Plans I Have Known… and Eaten\, for a two-part program in Hanover this July. \nOn Thursday\, July 16\, Russ will give a presentation at the Howe Library (and available online via Zoom) on edible plants one might find in the Upper Valley\, foraging ethics and techniques\, recipes\, and more. Those attending in person will be able to sample some of Russ’ creations sourced from wild plants! A registration link can be found on the Howe Library’s event page\, including the Zoom link sign-up. \nOn the next Saturday (July 18)\, Russ will lead a field walk at the Mink Brook Nature Preserve\, continuing the conversation and demonstrating field identification skills. Pre-registration for the field portion of the event is required\, please sign up here. \nAbout the speaker:\nRuss Cohen\, naturalist and wild foods enthusiast\, grew up in Weston\, Mass\, where he spent much of his free time in the woods\, thereby cultivating a strong spiritual connection to nature. He received his bachelor’s degree in land use planning from Vassar College in 1978\, and received a masters in Natural Resources and a law degree from The Ohio State University in 1982. Until retiring from state service\, Russ was employed by the Riverways Program (now part of the Division of Ecological Restoration) of the Mass. Department of Fish and Game since 1988\, and served as its Rivers Advocate from 1992 until June of 2015. Other past employers have included the Nature Conservancy\, the Land Trust Alliance\, The Hillside Trust\, a land trust in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
