Hanover Conservancy Comment on North Campus Proposal

January 6, 2023

Sunset over the proposed building site
Eroding gully on the driving range. Drainage from the proposed development would be sent in this direction toward Girl Brook.

The Hanover Conservancy has been following the proposals by Dartmouth College to develop a new campus on Lyme Road, north of the traditional campus, on its former golf course land. Concerns about challenging soils and drainage conditions, along with the proximity of Pine Park and the already-impaired Girl Brook, have led our organization to offer this comment.

Such an excellent letter to Planning and Zoning Boards with the soils analysis info presented along with your request that additional soil inspection be completed by a professional knowledgeable about the types of soil you’ve already identified are present and the dangers of developing this property. You also note current concerns about drainage and erosion issues already present as evidenced by recent photos.
I saw this letter only because a friend noticed it on your website and forwarded the link to me. We are members of the Conservancy and I wondered if you had plans to email your letter to Conservancy members — I expect they would be very interested to read about your concerns. Since the Zoning Board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 26th, the letter would have to be sent out very soon to educate Conservancy members. If you don’t want to send out the entire letter to all the members, at least send an email to the members that they can go to the website to read your letter if interested with a link to the letter included. The analysis you’ve completed already is valuable information that should be shared as part of the discussion at the Zoning meeting.
