Program Description:
We live in a moment of reflection and reconsideration concerning the history of our nation and the challenges of achieving an equitable and inclusive future. These contestations are closely tied to the history of “conservation” and land use in the Upper Valley Region and beyond. In the same breath, we live in a moment in which human-induced global environmental change rules out the possibility of “conserving” today’s landscapes as they presently exist. So how might we re-envision “conservation” with an eye towards the future? This talk will address these points based on current scholarship in the field of environmental studies, along with the implications for future land use in our region.
The annual meeting of the membership will include a nomination to the Board of Directors for Steve Lubrano.
Steve Lubrano graduated from Tuck in 1987 and returned to the Upper Valley in 1994 with his wife Allegra, where they found a most agreeable community in which to raise their three daughters through the Hanover School system. The family feels viscerally attached to their property on Goodfellow Road and were excited to purchase 500 acres of conserved land from Sam Doyle with the promise to Sam that they would continue his focus and dedication to the land – maintaining and expanding the network of trails, promoting the property as a wildlife habitat, keeping fields mowed, and sustainably harvesting timber according to the Forest Management plan maintained by Jeff Smith of Butternut Hollow Forestry. Steve is in his 26thyear working at the Tuck School of Business, has served locally as chair of the Howe Library Corporation Board, and looks forward to dedicating time to the efforts of the Conservancy, which align closely with his vision for the ideal community.

BIG News for the Mink Brook Community Forest!
This conservation project is a real winner, landing Hanover’s first LCHIP grant – $200,000 from the NH Land & Community Heritage Investment Program! This means fund-raising is now complete, thanks to generous support from the Hanover community, which attracted the support of LCHIP, the US Forest Service, and more. Any extra funds raised will go to help the Town care for the property – build trails and trailheads, deal with invasives, mowing, and more.

Zoom in to the final community meeting on Dec. 2, when Julie Evans of the Northern Forest Center will lead a discussion on conservation, forest management, and recreation priorities. We’ve got mail!
This fun mailbox on the summit of Balch Hill is filled with pens and postcards so visitors can write a note with their favorite memories of this natural area, whose summit we protected 50 years ago.
Some notes so far: “I am 7 1/2 years old and my Dad brought me here today for the first time! Thank you for keeping this place open. I love the butterflies.”

Hanover Lottery for Special Hunting Permits
The Town of Hanover has applied for 150 Special Deer Management Permits. These can be used in the Town’s Special Deer Management Area only according to NH Fish and Game Hunting Rules for Management Unit G-1.
The Special Deer Management Permits will be awarded to qualified hunters via a lottery system. A qualified hunter is one who has a valid NH hunting license and a photographic identification such as a driver’s license or passport. Youth hunters who do not have a photographic identification must provide a copy of their birth certificate to enter the lottery.
Each hunter may submit one entry to the special deer management permit lottery. Here is our lottery calendar:
July 1- August 13 – Submission of entries for lottery to Town Offices- applications (including email and phone #) must be submitted by US mail or email with copy of valid NH Hunting License and photographic identification. No early birds!!! Town Offices are located at 41 South Main Street, Hanover, NH. Lottery entries may be submitted in person via the front foyer, Mon.- Fri., 8:30- 4:30 pm.
August 14- Lottery draw- The Town Clerk will oversee the lottery.
August 17-18 Notification- By email, or phone, if email is not available
August 18-September 2- Hunters come to Town Offices to pick up their permits- Hanover Town Offices are located at 41 South Main Street. The town clerk’s office is open 8:30- 4:30. Hunters must bring valid NH Hunting License and photographic identification when they pick up their permit.
September 3-13- Wait list is activated to give away permits which were not claimed and given to hunters who were not selected in the lottery first round. Hunters on the wait list will be contacted and must bring valid NH Hunting License and photographic identification when they pick up their permit.
Lottery entries are available on-line at www.hanovernh.org, or by coming to the Hanover Town Offices to pick one up. The front foyer is open and entry forms will be available there July 1 through August 13th, Monday- Friday, 8:30 am- 4:30 pm.
