Thanks to the volunteers who came out on Upper Valley Trails Day to help Bill Knight repair and stabilize our beautiful bridge. Next up – a new round of activity at our Balch Hill Natural Area, where we are working under a cost-share grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to restore habitat and this historic agricultural landscape. Wider views will be the reward for human visitors!
This weekend’s trips
Come out and join us this weekend! On Saturday afternoon, we’ll be flying kites at Balch Hill and enjoying the newly opened views of Mt. Ascutney, the old stone wall, and parts of downtown Hanover. Thanks to the Swett Family for their essential support of this effort.
On Mother’s Day, Sunday afternoon, we’ll explore the McKinley Tract in search of spring wildflowers. Details here.
Spring Trip Cards & Bears
Current Hanover Conservancy members have now received colorful cards announcing our spring series of trips and programs. If you’d like to come along, find our schedule here.
Spring means new life! Neighbors of the Mink Brook Nature Preserve report a mother bear with two large cubs. These were likely born last year and are continuing their “home schooling” with their mother. Keep your eyes out (and we suggest leashing your dog).
A Look Back at Our Winter Trips
Our 2013 Winter Trip season is now complete. We visited the Trescott Water Company Lands, Tunis Brook watershed, the DOC Cabin on Moose Mountain, Morton Farm, Lord’s Hill, and Slade Brook. Spring trips are being planned – become a member to receive an announcement.
Other news: Mud Season has postponed the Hanover Select Board’s March 25 meeting on the Dana Pasture Lot to April 1.
Trescott Water Company Trip – March 2
On Saturday, we’ll return to the Trescott Water Company lands for a winter tour of the working woods. Space is limited, so this is a members-only tour. Members of Trescott Co. board and Hanover Select Board and Conservation Commission are also invited. Two spaces left- contact us before noon Friday. MORE
Bonfire at Balch Hill…XC Ski at Morton Farm
Bitter temps – time for a bonfire! On Friday, the Balch Hill Stewardship Committee will burn a large brush pile from this fall’s view restoration clearing. Helpers and onlookers are welcome as long as kids and dogs are kept under control.
Join us for a cross-country ski tour of the extensive trail system at Dartmouth’s Morton Farm on Saturday morning, January 26. Gorgeous views! MORE
